GOVERNMENT HOUSES SOLD, JAPPIE MHANGO IN POLICE CUSTODY
The Northern Region vice president of the Democratic Progressive Party(DPP) Jappie Mhango has slept in police custody in Mzuzu and is expected to be in court today after being arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau(ACB) following allegations on providing false information and over the abuse of office.
Mhango has been accused of misusing his public office during his tenure as Minister of Transport and Public Works in 2016 and 2017, and also authorization on the selling of government houses at a lower price, benefiting his relatives resulting in a loss of public revenue.
Lawyer Charles Lupande has said the court was only informed about one house and that Mhango was not cautioned yet.
Mhango has pleased with his political members to stop chaos at the station and maintain peace with the police.
"We can not make chaos here at the station as the police have just brought me here with the powers given to them by the ACB over political issues," Mhango said.
The governor of DPP, Christopher Mzomera Ngwira said that Mhango was not supposed to be arrested over political issues.
"We have struggled to be where we are now as a party here to the northern region and our leader Mhango can not be arrested like that over these issues. This as the party for DPP it is making us angry," said Ngwira.
The ACB has urged the public to resist, reject and report issues of corruption.
